Tamils in Canada are a significant diaspora community, primarily consisting of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees and immigrants who arrived following the Sri Lankan Civil War.
Tamils in Canada represent one of the largest Tamil diaspora communities outside of South Asia. The majority of Canadian Tamils originate from Sri Lanka, with smaller numbers from India, Malaysia, Singapore, and other countries.
Tamil migration to Canada began in small numbers in the 1960s and 1970s, primarily consisting of students and professionals from Sri Lanka and India. However, the community grew significantly during the 1980s and 1990s due to the Sri Lankan Civil War. Many Tamils fled ethnic violence and persecution, seeking refuge in Canada. The largest waves of Tamil refugees arrived between 1983 and 2009, when the civil war ended.
Today, there are approximately 200,000 to 300,000 Tamils living in Canada, making them one of the largest visible minority groups in the country. The vast majority have settled in Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, which hosts one of the world's largest Tamil populations outside of Asia. Significant communities also exist in Montreal, Quebec, and smaller numbers in other Canadian cities.
