Pongal Festival is a vibrant four-day harvest festival celebrated primarily by Tamil communities around the world on January 14, 2027. This ancient thanksgiving ceremony marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the sun's six-month-long journey northward, known as Uttarayana. The festival gets its name from the traditional dish Pongal, a sweet rice pudding made with freshly harvested rice, milk, jaggery, and spices that is ceremonially prepared and allowed to boil over as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. Families gather to cook this special dish in clay pots, often decorated with turmeric plants and sugarcane, while chanting Pongalo Pongal, meaning may it overflow, to welcome good fortune for the coming year.
The celebration extends beyond South India to Tamil communities worldwide, including significant observances in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and other countries with Tamil diaspora populations. Each of the four days has special significance: Bhogi Pongal for discarding old belongings, Surya Pongal for worshipping the Sun God, Mattu Pongal for honoring cattle and livestock, and Kaanum Pongal for family reunions and social gatherings. Traditional activities include decorating homes with colorful kolam patterns made from rice flour, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts, and performing folk dances. The festival represents gratitude to nature, the sun, and farm animals for a bountiful harvest, embodying the agricultural heritage and cultural identity of Tamil people across the globe.
பொங்கல் தமிழர்களின் மிக முக்கியமான பாரம்பரிய திருநாளாகும். இது தை மாதத்தின் முதல் நாளான தை பொங்கல் அன்று கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. இந்த விழா நான்கு நாட்கள் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. முதல் நாள் போகி பொங்கல், இரண்டாம் நாள் தை பொங்கல், மூன்றாம் நாள் மாட்டு பொங்கல், நான்காம் நாள் காணும் பொங்கல் என அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன. விவசாயிகள் தங்கள் விளைச்சலுக்கு நன்றி தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில் சூரியனுக்கும் இயற்கைக்கும் நன்றி செலுத்தும் திருநாளாக பொங்கல் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
பொங்கல் நாளில் புதிய மண் பானையில் பால், அரிசி, பருப்பு, வெல்லம் சேர்த்து சர்க்கரைப் பொங்கல் செய்யப்படுகிறது. வீடுகளை கோலம் போட்டு அலங்கரிப்பார்கள். கரும்பு, மஞ்சள், இஞ்சி போன்றவற்றால் வீட்டை அழகுபடுத்துவார்கள். மாட்டு பொங்கல் அன்று கால்நடைகளுக்கு நன்றி செலுத்தும் வகையில் அவற்றை கழுவி, பூசி, மாலை அணிவித்து வழிபடுவார்கள். உறவினர்களும் நண்பர்களும் ஒன்று கூடி பொங்கலோ பொங்கல் என்று கூறி மகிழ்ச்சியாக கொண்டாடும் அழகான பண்டிகை இது.
Pongal er en vigtig høsttidsfestival, der fejres af tamiler over hele verden, og i 2027 falder denne fire-dage lange fejring på den 14. januar. Pongal markerer slutningen på høstsæsonen og er en tid til at takke solen, naturen og husdyrene for deres bidrag til en vellykket høst. Festivalen har fået sit navn fra den traditionelle ret "pongal", som er en sød risret kogt med mælk og jaggery, der tilberedes i lerkrukker, som ofte flyder over som et symbol på overflod og velstand. Familier samles for at fejre med traditionel musik, dans og ved at pynte deres hjem med kolam-mønstre lavet af rismel.
